Mac is a highly experienced leader in Fire Services, Emergency Management, and Public Safety, with over 43 years of dedicated service across Alberta. As an Executive Chief Fire Officer, Mac has successfully manged diverse roles, including Director of Emergency Management for both urban and rural municipalities, in both volunteer and career organizations. His extensive experience in fire service training, coupled with his expertise in policy development, risk assessment and operational management, makes him an invaluable asset in any public safety role.

Advisor and Trainer
Provided expert guidance, mentoring, and training to numerous fire departments focusing on:

  • Fire master planning, training programs, injury and loss prevention, fire investigation, equipment and facilities management, adherence to codes and standards, policy development, governance, risk assessment, liability protection, occupational health and safety requirements and emergency and non-emergency operations.

Leadership in Emergency Management
Served in key roles during local states of emergency, including:

  • As Director of Emergency Management and Operations Section Chief.
  • The development and implementation of emergency pre-action plans for Municipalities.

Collective Bargaining and Labour Relations
Played a pivotal role in negotiations with the International Association of Firefighter (IAFF), contributing to the establishment of initial and subsequent agreements, and working on Labour/management committees to enhance workforce relations.

Inter-Agency Coordination and Regional Planning
Demonstrated strong planning and implementation skills through collaboration with municipal, officials and staff since 2000 aimed at improving regional and inter-agency response capabilities for both day-to-day operations and at multi-jurisdictional emergency incidents.

Professional Contributions and Recognitions

  • Past Board Member of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association and active participant in its Conference Organizational Committee and Protocol Committee serving as the inaugural Chair since 2016.
  • Appointed by the Provincial Fire Commissioner to the Emergency Services Medal Committee in 2000 and again in 2013.
  • Long standing member of the esteemed professional associations, including the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, and the National Fire Protection Association.
  • Safety Codes Officer – Group B Level 1 in the Fire Discipline.

  • Queens Golden, QEII Golden, Diamond and Platinum Jubilee Medals, KCIII Coronation Medal, Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal with 40 year bar, Alberta Centennial Medal, and the Alberta Emergency Services Medal with 40 year bar. Also received the Southern Alberta Floods Commendation Medal, Canada 150 Medal, the Trochu commemorative medal, Fire Service Commendation for Meritorious Service, the Canadian Volunteer Fire Association Service Medal with 40 year bar.
  • Appointed as an Aide-de-Camp for the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta in 2019.
  • Recognized as a Life-time Member of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association in 2024.
